Expressions Without Rules

Expressions Without Rules, presented by the La Jolla office of Ascent Private Capital Management of U.S. Bank, features a collection of modern artwork from the 1970s and 1980s.

This collection shows the breadth of modern art through the use of many mediums as well as the influence of other movements and world events. The artists often invite the viewer to reject tradition, and adopt an open mind to experience expression without rules or assumptions. Valerio Adami combines the Pop Art movement with French cloisonnism through cartoonish imagery and eye-popping colors. Frank Okada uses primary colors to catch the eye, but then the viewer is quickly pulled to the definitive outlines holding the bold colors in place. James Marshall begins with a geometric shape that transforms into something almost fluid through his unique glazing process. The simplicity in these pieces of art draw the viewer into another world, but really offers a deeper message — a commentary on society, the search for universality, breaking from the expected.
